Trail Reviews

Olivier
December 13, 2025, Les Puechs – boucle au départ de Mialet – Parc national des Cévennes

The hike is difficult not because of the distance or elevation gain, but because of the presence of numerous rocks (see photos).

This round took us into the green, but stony and barren landscape of the Cevennes: if the view can wander far, the hills and slopes are green, villages are idyllically situated on hilltops or on slopes, these are otherwise often terraced. If you look up close, there is dense, impenetrable maquis, dry earth, abandoned olive or fruit groves grow wild. (If you consider that macchia is a product of human settlement ... and has displaced the former holm oak forest ...) The paths lead partly over bare rock, partly between stacked walls over often loose stones (are no longer maintained and are as they used to be not going well); however, two GR hiking trails lead here and there are a surprising number of other hikers on the way. The noise of cicadas accompanied us all the time; again and again (inhabited and uninhabited) country houses appeared on the wayside; the views of these houses are often picture perfect. Very nice, especially Luziers and the alleys of Mialet. The Mialet Bridge (early 18th century) is particularly picturesque.
