This route was planned by komoot.
The route primarily traverses unpaved surfaces, including gravel and natural paths, with some singletrack sections. You'll experience the unique 'badlands' formations, characterized by extensive networks of arid desert landscapes, dramatic geological features, and the striking sandstone rock formations known as 'Los Coloraos'.
This trail is rated as a moderate mountain bike ride, requiring good fitness. While some segments are suitable for all skill levels (STS S0-S1), other portions demand advanced riding skills (STS S2). More challenging sections may require very good fitness and potentially pushing your bike.
The trail offers stunning views and unique geological formations. Key highlights include the Cerro de la Bandera, the dramatic Gorafe Desert Canyons, the visually striking Los Coloraos Badlands, and the panoramic Puntal de Don Diego Viewpoint.
The 'red deserts' of Los Coloraos offer great panoramas at any time of the day or year. However, for mountain biking, spring and autumn are generally ideal to avoid the extreme heat of summer and potential colder, wetter conditions in winter. Always check local weather forecasts before you go.
While dogs are generally allowed on trails in this region, it's important to keep them on a leash to protect local wildlife and respect other trail users. Be mindful of the arid conditions and ensure your dog has plenty of water, especially during warmer months, as there are no natural water sources on the trail.
This trail is located within the Geoparque de Granada. Generally, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required for mountain biking on the public trails within the Geoparque. However, always respect local regulations and private property signs.
The trail is a circular route starting from Gorafe. You can typically find parking within or on the outskirts of the town of Gorafe, which serves as a convenient starting point for this loop. Specific parking areas may vary, so look for designated spots or consult local maps upon arrival.
Yes, this route overlaps with several other paths. You will find sections that are part of the Ruta del Desierto de Gorafe, Gorafe - Vereda Chirlata, El Camino Espiritual del Sur, and various segments of the Camino de los Campos Mones.
The trail starts and ends near Gorafe, a small desert town. You can find basic amenities, including cafes and potentially some local accommodation, in Gorafe itself. The nearby towns of Castilléjar and Galera also offer additional options for refreshments and lodging.
This trail is celebrated as one of the most beautiful mountain bike routes in Granada due to its unique desert landscapes and dramatic badlands formations, particularly the visually striking 'Los Coloraos'. It offers an immersive experience in the wild and vast deserts of Southern Spain, providing a glimpse into a truly unique part of the world.
Given its 'moderate' difficulty rating and sections requiring good fitness and advanced riding skills (STS S2), this trail might be challenging for younger children or families new to mountain biking. Some easier segments (STS S0-S1) could be suitable, but the full loop requires a higher level of experience and endurance.
That was probably one of the most spectacular tours I've done so far. Unfortunately on an E-MTB as you couldn't rent anything else in the village of Gorafe. I really want to cross this area again with my gravel bike and the appropriate bikepacking equipment.
Route with very nice views, I recommend doing it the other way around than we did it because it has an ugly part that is better to pass it down and then you do the whole climb seeing the views calmly, otherwise you have to stop a lot to see everything. It has areas that make it look like you're in Jordan.
