Scaliger Castle of Malcesine

Highlight • Castle

The fortress of Malcesine can be dated to the last centuries of the first millennium BC. Although there are some documents that state this castle was built sometime in the mid-first millennium AD. built by the Lombards.
The castle was destroyed by the Franks in 590 AD and then rebuilt. In 806 it was the residence of King Pepin, who came to Malcesine to visit Saints Benigno and Caro, and after the Hungarian invasion it was part of the episcopal feud of Verona.
From 1277 to 1387 it was under the control of Alberto della Scala's and his family.
During this period, the Scaligeri renovated the fortress, which was henceforth called "Scaliger Castle" and was occupied by the House of Visconti from 1387 to 1403.
Two years later it was placed under the rule of the Republic of Venice and remained under that control until 1506. When the castle was conquered by the Empire, the castle changed hands a couple of times: it belonged again to the Republic of Venice from 1516 to 1897, then to the French, followed by the Austrians who initiated significant fortification works inside the building and here from 1798 to 1866 remained. From that year it became Venetian property.
On August 22, 1902, the castle was declared a national monument.

Old Harbour of Malcesine

Highlight • Settlement

The small fishing port "Porto Vecchio" on Piazza Magenta was once the center of the town of Malcesine. Today, only small (fishing) boats set sail from here.

Where the boats were once pulled ashore on a ramp, visitors can now find a quiet area framed by simple houses and decorated with contemporary stone sculptures.

Trail Reviews

Petra 🚴‍♀️🎒🥾
September 11, 2023, 🇮🇹 Letzter Rundgang in Malcesine und am Strand entlang

We spent and enjoyed the last day at Lake Garda extensively in Malcesine. We look at the cable car that goes up to Monte Baldo. We actually wanted to go up, but I'm a shithead and don't really like riding in cable cars if it can be avoided. 50 euros for the two of us, we found it quite expensive. When we saw the snakes everyone wanted to take the train, that was done for us anyway. So we took a long walk on the beach. Now it's time to say goodbye tomorrow, we certainly weren't here for the last time. It was nice! Tomorrow we're going to South Tyrol for a week on the Ritten, the complete opposite of Lake Garda. Absolute peace and hopefully beautiful hikes.

Malcesine is opposite Limone. In a few minutes you can take the boat to the other side. There is even a light breeze blowing here, which makes it a little more bearable.🥵

Holidays in Limone sul Garda... pure dolce vita... we stroll through the beautiful alleys and enjoy delicious gelato in hot temperatures. The boat takes you to Malcesine with its idyllic old town, the great little harbor and the magnificent Scalinger Castle. Along the beautiful lake promenade we enjoy the view of the beautiful Lake Garda and I swim a little lap right away... I've got bathing shoes with me, there are a lot of stones here...otherwise ouch😉😀 Greetings to you and enjoy the weekend ☀️🦋🐞🐝🌸💦
