Basilica of Meerssen

Highlight • Religious Site

The Basilica of the Holy Sacrament (Dutch Basiliek van het H. Sacrament), St. Bartholomew's Basilica or Basilica of Meerssen is a Roman Catholic church in Meerssen, Netherlands-Limburg. The parish church is dedicated to the Holy Sacrament and the Apostle Bartholomew. She was on June 16, 1938 by Pope Pius XI. elevated to a minor basilica.[1] The church is an example of Maas Gothic and is considered the pinnacle of this style in the Netherlands. The building has been a Rijksmonument since 1967.

Van Tienhoven Mill

Highlight • Monument

The Van Tienhoven mill in the hamlet of Wolfshuis in the Dutch-Limburg municipality of Eijsden-Margraten is a belt mill from 1855. It is the only mill in the Netherlands that was built entirely from marl stone and is abundant in the region. The hood is covered with roofing felt. The mill was in operation until 1938 and has been a national monument since 1967. The mill has a pair of grinders with a 16th artificial stone 140 cm in diameter.
The Van Tienhoven mill can be visited every 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
The interesting story can be read on Wikipedia.

Sibberhuuske

Highlight • Historical Site

Sibberhuuske was originally a castle farm, a fortified house with thick walls, embrasures, a moat with a drawbridge and two towers. Even now in the 21st century - now that the local castle lord no longer has to fear wandering gangs and the enormous difference between farmers, dignitaries and nobility in the area has disappeared - the Sibberhuuske castle courtyard has retained much of its original character.
This castle courtyard was one of the first inhabited buildings on the Margraten plateau. It is known to be even older due to a mention from the end of the fourteenth century, the cellars from the sixteenth century and the fact that the Spanish Duke Alva confiscated it in 1570. The castle courtyard is largely built with natural materials such as marble and brick. Despite a serious fire in 1935, the northwest wing, entrance gate and fountain are still original.

Valkenburg on the Geul

Highlight • Settlement

Valkenburg has been one of the Netherlands' most important holiday destinations since around 1840, and tourism is the municipality's main source of income. This has much to do with the medieval town's picturesque location, but the extensive labyrinths of underground quarries also played an important role from the very beginning. However, the original idea of using the caves for air cures never came to fruition.

The castle grounds are very diverse. An unusual sculpture park, the castle itself, an adjoining hotel with gastronomy, the extensive park offer a great flair.

Curfsgroeve Lime Kiln

Highlight • Monument

The Kalkoven bij Curfsgroeve is a dilapidated lime kiln from 1916, located in nature near Geulhem (South Limburg), near the former Curfsgroeve. In the past, marl was burned here into lime. The area is now a protected nature reserve with special animals and fossils. You can walk there via marked routes with beautiful views over the quarry. The place combines cultural history, geology and nature.
