Speiersgasse Historic Street

Highlight • Historical Site

The Speiersgasse and the adjacent Kaulberg belong to the early settlement core of Zeil. With its numerous listed buildings, it is one of the most beautiful and important side streets in the old town. Starting from the market square and over the Kaulberg, it runs in an exactly east-west direction to the Altach city wall, where only a narrow pedestrian gate has always allowed exit from the city. When most of the houses were built in the 17th and 18th centuries, Speiersgasse was mainly inhabited by arable citizens. This is indicated by the numerous gate entrances and large plots of land enclosed by (originally) agricultural outbuildings. Between Speiersgasse and Marktplatz is the Kaulberg, which has been characterized by a representative fountain since the city's 600th anniversary in 1979 (following the former "Speiersbrunnen"). At both ends, Speiersgasse is visually terminated: to the east, this is a residential building built in the 18th century across the street against the city wall; to the west, the steeply rising Kaulberg, reinforced by a retaining wall, with the towering parish church in the background.

Zeiler Käppele Pilgrimage Church

Highlight • Religious Site

The landmark of Zeil am Main is the "Zeiler Käppele", a pilgrimage church that towers above the town on the Kapellenberg and can be seen from afar. A miniature replica of the Lourdes Grotto can be found here. From the Käppele you have a beautiful view of the Zeil and the Main Valley.

A Franconian Lourdes

The Käppele chapel on Zeiler Kapellenberg (Zeiler Chapel Hill) is often referred to as the "Franconian Lourdes." The pilgrimage chapel was designed entirely in the style of French cathedrals, and pilgrims will even find a miniature replica of the Lourdes Grotto, which is visited by immense numbers of pilgrims every year.

The grotto, modeled after the French Lourdes, and the monumental-looking mountain chapel were built in 1883 and 1897, respectively, on the initiative of Father Karl-Josef Link. Since then, the site has been a frequently and regularly visited pilgrimage destination in the eastern part of the Franconian Marian Way. Furthermore, the Zeiler Käppele is a special place of prayer for those considering vocations to the priesthood.

Historic center of Zeil am Main

Highlight • Historical Site

In the Hexenturm in Zeil, those accused of witchcraft were previously subjected to "embarrassing" interrogation, ie torture.
Most of them came from Bamberg and were tortured alone far from their actual home!
Many did not survive, even if they did not confess.
