Byland Abbey Ruins

Highlight • Historical Site

Absolutely non-miss this one. This is one of the finest and greatest monasteries in England. Byland Abbey inspired the way churches were built throughout the north. These almost preposterously amazing and extensive ruins used to be a Cistercian abbey in the 12th century, with 36 monks and 100 lay brothers.

The Abbey is maintained by English Heritage and completely free to enter as long as it's daylight.

Kilburn White Horse

Highlight • Historical Site

Kilburn White Horse is one of the most famous landmarks in North Yorkshire. The turf-cut figure, the most northerly of its kind in Britain, is 314 feet (96 m) long and 220 feet (67 m) high and dates from 1857.

When you are above the White Horse it is difficult to get a sense of its enormous scale so it is worth following the steps down to view it from below.

Sutton Bank Bikes Shop & Bike Wash

Highlight • Rest Area

Great shop located at the visitor centre for the Sutton Bank bike trails, where you'll also find a cafe, toilets and parking.

Managed to slip me in for a quick brake bleed when I got to the top and realised my front brake was a bit spongy.

Very helpful staff and a great variety of products/bikes.

National Trust site that's well worth a stop off. No facilities or cafe or anything like that, but if you've got a picnic or just want to get some nice photos, then it's a must.

Nunnington Hall

Highlight • Monument

This National Trust property is a 17th-century manor house. You will find a sheltered walled garden here outside, and inside an oak-panelled hall, family rooms and even a haunted room!

As this belongs to The National Trust, you will need to pay to get in, but it's well-worth it!
