Leeds and Liverpool Canal at Parbold

Parbold is a village on the leeds liverpool canal with nice cafes and pubs for refreshment. This stretch of canal is lovely.

Parbold Hill offers views for anyone walker who wants to just soak in the nice breeze at the summit. You can see places such as Ashurst Beacon (named after Sir William Ashurst who built the beacon on top of the hill back in 1798 as a watch tower), Winter Hill, Wigan and even a bit of North Wales over yonder. It is one of my recommended viewpoints to visit in Lancashire.

Coronation Bridge

if you approach from Ashurst's Beacon, avoid the drop in the tree roots by walking slightly to the left and there is a much safer path. having crossed the bridge and walked to the end of the path there is now a homemade rope which is helpful when access is needed to Longheys lane. it is a personal choice!

Ashurst Beacon

An easy walk up to the tower from the road. It has great views looking out towards Liverpool and Blackpool
This beacon tower was built in 1798 by Sir William Ashurst. It was built as a watch tower to warn of a French invasion in the lead up to the Napoleonic War. It is said to be on the site of an earlier beacon that once formed part of a relay series of beacons. They stretched from Everton Brow above Liverpool to Lancaster Castle. They were in place (though unused) during the Anglo–Spanish War of 1585.

Highlight • Bridge

The Leeds & Liverpool canal runs for 127miles between the two cities. Originally built for transporting goods it's use declined after the railways and nowadays it's predominantly used for recreation. The canal path is always a nice place to walk with an easy trail underfoot and plenty of interest along the way.
