Gaythorne Plain Crossroads

Highlight • Viewpoint

This featureless, grassy area might not strike you like a good idea for a highlight, but paths (rather than roads, really) cross here, so it's a place full of choices.

Go east and you will shortly reach Linglow Hill. Go north to get to Coalpit Hill. South - to reach Great Asby Scar and its natural reserve and/or Beacon Hill. And, finally, it is west to the B6260 and the car park there.

It sure is quiet here. I bet nothing has really changed here for decades.

This is a great place to sit for a while on a long walk. This bench, with Queen Elizabeth coronation plaque on it (Queen Elizabeth was crowned in 1953) is nicely tucked away from the road, with flowers planted around you for added effect. Sheep behind you in the field, lovely countryside views ahead, a place to put your backpack, peace and quiet - what more could a human want?

St Peter's Church, Great Asby

Highlight • Historical Site

This church dates back to Norman times, with some evidence of it being potentially Saxon prior to that, too. However, it was practically completely rebuilt in 1864-65.

The church has this "classic English church" feel as though it's straight out of an Agatha Christie novel. It is worth stopping here for a bit and have a rest in this peaceful place.
