Kentchurch Court and St. Mary's Church

Highlight • Historical Site

Below the gentle slopes of the surrounding hills, Kentchurch is a lovely village by the River Monnow in Herefordshire. According to some, it was the home of the legendary Jack o' Kent, a popular bogeyman figure in Herefordshire and Monmouthshire folklore. The Bridge Inn does excellent food.

The historic Kentchurch Court is a Grade I-listed building that dates back to the 14th century. It has seen many revamps, not least in the late 18th century when it was given a gothic remodelling by John Nash.

River Monnow Swimming Spot

Highlight • Natural Monument

On the other side of the ruins of Skenfrith Castle you'll find shady, sandy spots where you can easily wade into the River Monnow for a swim. Busy with children in summer, but there are wonderful deeper pools in the river that are well worth a dip in any season. You can also picnic and sunbathe on the swathe of grass to the left.

St. Bridget's Church

Highlight • Religious Site

St Bridget's is a super quaint church in Skenfrith village, right next door to the equally charming Skenfrith Castle. It was built in 1207, and it is reputed to be one of the oldest churches to be in continuous use in Wales. It is a beautiful church with a large, rather squat tower with a narrow wooden clapperboard effect near the top. It is unique and quite different to other Welsh churches. It is so important to keep this Christian heritage alive in Wales, especially this fine example.
