Allihies Village

Historically, Allihies owed its wealth to copper. At the height of its operation by the powerful Puxley family, the mines employed as many as 1,500 people, including 400 miners, primarily Welsh immigrants. Angered by this interference, local residents refused to provide them with supplies, forcing them to import provisions from Wales. The mines closed in the 1880s, and the few attempts to reopen them failed.
