The sculpture „Würfelspiel“ (Dice Game) depicts an event from 1677. Two deserted landsknechts were sentenced to death. The ringleader was to be punished even more harshly – with a penalty that was intended to be effective even beyond death.

The town court could not identify him and decided that the two had to roll dice under the gallows on a landsknecht drum to determine the method of execution – the one who rolled the lowest number would be hanged, and the „winner“, with the higher number, would be shot. Death was thus already decided for both players, but it was about something else, which is hardly understandable from today's perspective – it was a game about the fate of the soul. To seal this, three rounds of dice were needed –

Departing life by being shot was considered honorable. The one who was shot could be buried in the „God’s acre“. Thus, a vague hope remained for the soul to escape eternal damnation through purification in purgatory and then reach the kingdom of heaven. Death by hanging, on the other hand, was considered dishonorable. The corpse was buried somewhere or simply left hanging on the gallows and given to the birds as food. The soul went to the devil and was lost forever – damnation for eternity – which was probably a gruesome thought even for hardened landsknechts at the time.

This is a true story that can be found in the Landesarchiv BW in Karlsruhe.

The sculpture was created from a dead and decapitated linden tree that stood in front of the castle.

This is the castle of this four-castle tour, where you can still admire the most. We are lucky that the kiosk of the stronghold has opened. I am looking forward to a hot bratwurst for strengthening before the last section of the route.
