View of Bonifacio

Highlight • Viewpoint

The path leads steadily uphill, up to the upper town of Bonifacio. When you reach the old town, situated on a narrow headland, you will be impressed by the almost unmanageable, picturesque alleyway that leads to the main tourist attraction of Bonifacio, the medieval citadel. It makes up most of the Upper Town to the west and is one of the most imposing and mighty fortresses in the Mediterranean region.

From the western part of the Berlin Wall the visitor gets an especially impressive overview of the size of the facility. The massive, huge structure with its fortified walls and towers is almost completely preserved and perched for centuries on the rocky plateau high above the sea. Large parts of the citadel are accessible to visitors and allow, especially from the top fortification wall, stunning views over the harbor and the steeply sloping limestone cliffs. Here begins the spectacular staircase of the King of Aragon, which leads over 187 steps in the adventurous 45-degree angle, on the steep cliff face down to the sea. Even today, the Citadel of Bonifacio can be accessed via the only access to the 19th century, the Genoese Gate.

Pertusato lighthouse

The lighthouse takes its name from this well-known rock cliff of the same name, which rises about 100 m above the water and is the southernmost point of Corsica.

The south is calling! After three weeks we finally made it to the south side of the island - and then straight to the southernmost point. We hiked along the coast towards what is perhaps the most beautiful town in Corsica. Bonifacio is therefore rightly the most visited town in Corsica. You can hike here seemingly endlessly. Exciting limestone cliffs …

Another superb hike, frequented on the way back but still such fabulous landscapes, scents and flora 👍🏼🦶🏻. And culinary specialties 😁

Showing Translation

Today we headed to the southern tip of Corsica.
Bonifatio is the southernmost town. Half town, half fortress, and well worth seeing, right on the cliffs. Strolling through the narrow streets of the upper town, across the former barracks grounds to the cemetery, continually opens up new views and gives a glimpse into the town's eventful history.

Showing Translation

The tour can be easily combined with a stroll through Bonifacio, especially since you can park for free on the street at the starting point.

Beautiful hike, very passable trail, breathtaking views.
In July and August early in the morning no shade on the whole route

Always along the cliffs with beautiful views. Steep descent at the Phare😨 and finally in the cool streets of the city ☕️ + 🍦!

The "expert" section involves some hand over hand above the breach. Its not difficult if you have good mobility. We went down the section without a problem.
