Wide descent at the beginning which quickly becomes a wide and (very) fast single with a progressively steeper slope. Adrenaline pumping but watch out for the sharp left turn at the bottom, also no, let's dive! Ends with crossing a pretty little footbridge over black water.

Château Saint-Roch

Highlight • Castle

The abundance of iron ore, forests and waterways in the Couvin region very early enabled the establishment of metallurgical activities. Forges developed randomly in the 16th and 17th centuries. In 1737, the Desandruin family practiced industrial concentration for the first time by renting several forges. We owe him in particular the growth of the Saint-Roch factories. These forges quickly prospered, particularly between 1765 and 1785. In 1795, the site became a cannon foundry. The annexation to France the same year, and the wars led by Napoleon, were favorable to him. The site then housed a blast furnace between 1826 and 1833. English competition and the loss of the market from the Royal Dutch Navy, however, got the better of the company and precipitated bankruptcy. In 1837, the site was sold and operations ceased definitively. The witnesses of this disappeared industrial activity are today located in the center of a very extensive park. It is a complex of buildings erected from limed limestone rubble in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. Château Saint-Roch, dated 1739, is an imposing classical construction of two levels. Opposite is an old freight elevator. Behind the buildings, a vast retention pond also recalls the industrial function of yesteryear. We can see a remarkable bridge-dam from the first half of the 19th century, which once regulated the level of the Eau Noire. To the west of the industrial buildings is the old Saint-Roch farm, dating from the first half of the 18th century.
