Grenofen Tunnel

Great walk, the footpath from the top of brook lane/Rix hill is not well used, just follow the hedgeline!

Part of the Drake’s Trail and the Dartmoor Way, this 374-yard (341 m) tunnel was built by Brunel in the mid-1850s for the South Devon & Tavistock Railway. After the line closed, it sat abandoned for decades before being resurfaced and opened as a foot and cycle path.

The tunnel is lit and is a fun addition to an already amazing route. It has a tendency to drip on the heads of those who use it though!

Gem Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

Gem Bridge towers 78 feet (24 m) above the River Walkham, affording wonderful views over the valley below. Until 1965, the original Walkham Viaduct would have stood here. Designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, it was demolished after the closure of the railway.

It's a wonderful experience to cycle over the bridge, especially in autumn when the trees are painted red.

This is an exciting section of the glorious 21-mile Drake's Trail cycling path that runs through Dartmoor.

You will pass through enchanting forestry featuring seasonal bluebells and over Magpie Viaduct, where you'll be afforded some wonderful birds-eye views of the surrounding landscape.

Magpie Viaduct

Magpie Viaduct was designed by Brunel and originally built in 1859 from granite and timber, then rebuilt in 1902 in Staffordshire brick.

From here you can also enjoy a raised vantage point for views over Dartmoor.

The Trail passes through quaint countryside, river valleys, peaceful woodland, and vast open moorland. The historic route also includes iconic engineering feats like the Grenofen Tunnel and Gem Bridge. A traffic-free trail, the path is suitable for most types of bikes, although some sections are gravel and slippery in the rain.
