Chochołowska Valley

Highlight • Gorge

The Chochołowska Valley is the largest and longest valley in Poland’s Tatra Mountains, stretching 10 kilometers. Known for its scenic beauty, it features dense spruce forests, alpine meadows, and a deep gorge with dramatic narrows. Popular for hiking and cycling, the main trail leads to the PTTK Mountain Shelter on the Chochołowska Clearing. In spring, the valley transforms into a vibrant sea of crocuses, drawing many visitors. It also preserves its shepherding heritage, with traditional cheese-making still practiced.

Kmietowicz Rock

Highlight • Natural Monument

This rock at an altitude of 987m above sea level is made of dolomite. There are two small caves in the rock, called "shelters". The rock was named after Father Józef Leopold Kmietowicz, the leader of the Chochołów Uprising of 1846. You will also find a commemorative plaque here commemorating all the participants of this uprising.

This shelter, opened in 1953, is located on Polana Chochołowska at an altitude of 1146m. You can eat here and stay overnight (smoking is not allowed). It is a great base for trips to the Western Tatras.

View of Chochołowska Valley

Highlight • Viewpoint

This is one of the rare paths where dogs are allowed in the Tatra National Park (on the Polish side). There are parking lots and from there, it is a 7-8km long walk (one way). You walk in a valley along a small river. At the end, there is a hut with toilets, drinks and food.

Chapel at Polana Chochołowska - a wooden chapel located near the forest, on the upper edge of the Chochołowska Glade in the Chochołowska Valley in the Western Tatras. It is built in highland style with unpainted planks, covered with black, wooden shingles. Its dome is topped with a cross made of raw, rough wood. The chapel was built in 1958 for highlanders who at that time grazed sheep on the Chochołowska Glade. A scene of Janosik's shot was shot at the chapel. The chapel was given the name of Saint. John the Baptist. There is a cross next to the chapel. It was erected in 2003, in memory of the stay of John Paul II at Polana Chochołowska in 1983. Karol Wojtyła has been here many times before. There were benches next to the chapel. In the tourist season, from June to October, there are holy masses held at 13 o'clock. Next to the chapel, there is a small roofed shed and a wooden cross. In 1996, the road leading to the chapel was paved.
