Oberwesel: Old Town and City Walls

Highlight • Historical Site

The so-called city of towers is characterized by its city wall with its 16 towers. On the former fortification you can walk around. Further attractions in Oberwesel are, for example, the Liebfrauenkirche and the striking St. Martin's Church, whose church tower was expanded in 1350 to a fortified tower.

Oberwesel is also one of the largest wine-growing communities in the Middle Rhine. On the 72 hectares of the steep vineyard Schönburg Castle, the winemakers mainly grow Riesling, Müller-Thurgau and Kerner. How about a tasting?

Powder Tower, Oberwesel

Highlight • Monument

The tower was built in 1241/42 when the city wall was built. You can see very well the stone layers running through the wall and the semicircular tower walls.

Oberwesel Town Wall and Towers

Highlight • Historical Site

The Stadtmauerweg Oberwesel is highly recommended, because on the Rhine-side part you have a beautiful view over the railway tracks to the Rhine and the half-timbered houses. I particularly like the view from the city wall on the mountain side of Oberwesel with the Church of Our Lady and the Schönburg.

Church of St. Martin, Oberwesel

Saint Martin, to whom the church / chapel in Oberwesel is consecrated, is - next to Saint Nicholas - probably one of the most popular saints of all. The memorial day of the former officer in the Roman army is November 11th. On the night after the famous “coat sharing”, when he surrendered half his army cloak to a freezing beggar, Jesus Christ appears to him in a dream. He converted to Christianity and was later elected Bishop of Tours (France) - initially against his will.
Many should have fond childhood memories of lantern handicrafts in kindergarten and elementary school, the evening lantern parade through the dark village / district - and of course of the delicious “Weckmann”.

Schönburg Castle

Highlight • Castle

Today there is a hotel in the former Schönburg castle. Visitors can still tour the medieval castle and eat at the restaurant. In the tower museum you can learn everything about the history of the castle and its defense tactics. On the top level of the tower, a viewing platform awaits you with a magnificent all-round view.

During the summer months, the museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday (10 a.m. to 6 p.m.). In the low season on weekends from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Entry is 3 euros. All information about the castle can be found here: hotel-schoenburg.com.

On the way over the Elfenley Castle Path, you can look down into the deeply cut valley to Engehöll, the Hardtberg towering above it and the steep, southern vineyards of Oberwesel.

September 14, 2024,Oberwesel am Rhein 💚 Stadtmauer * Liebfrauenkirche * Schönburg * Elfenley
At the beginning of summer, when we were on the other side of the Rhine on the Langhalsweg (which, by the way, has actually become Germany's most beautiful hiking trail in 2024 👏) and really noticed the beauty of Oberwesel from the car, we immediately decided: we have to take a closer look at this spot.

The city wall circular route is nicely laid out and really interesting. You can't really see much of the castle, the view is very nice. The highlight is the Elfenleyweg. Beautiful narrow paths, looks a bit alpine, with many small vantage points.

I explored Oberwesel - "the city of towers and wine in the beautiful Upper Middle Rhine Valley" today and collected a lot of wonderful impressions. This city has a lot of varied and early historical background ready. The old city wall that can be walked on, the diverse towers of the city fortifications, picturesque half-timbered houses, the Church of Our …

Our final walk of the wonderful hiking holiday. We saw Oberwesel on the castle trip to Rüdesheim. Actually, it was planned to go there by bike in the late afternoon. But you don't really have to do the bike path along the Rhine at this point -> you drive the 15km directly on Bundesstr. along. Noise and exhaust fumes included.

Very nice little round with memories of the Rheinburgenweg, which is now called "World Heritage Trail"... you have to give the child a new name...🤠👍

When we arrived it was 3:50 p.m. it was cloudy the temperature was around 0, a little above 😉 parking lot near the castle, we packed our backpacks and set off through the castle and down to the town with panoramas and serpentines. The evening walk was extreme and beautiful at the same time when we drank hot mulled wine …
