This place is not only the lowest point in Schleswig-Holstein, but is also considered the lowest natural point in the entire Federal Republic of Germany!

Lowest Point in Germany

Highlight • Natural Monument

The lowest point in Germany is visually not a spectacular, but a very impressive place. It is 3.54 meters below sea level - the water here would be around five meters high at normal flood if the Elbe dyke didn't exist. It becomes even more impressive when you stand in front of the mast with the displays of the storm surge levels at this point. Only then does one really become aware of the elemental forces associated with the Elbe.

View of Herrenmoor bei Kleve

Highlight • Viewpoint

The Herrenmoor nature reserve near Kleve is located on the edge of the Elbmarsch in the transition area to the Geest. It is framed in the north by the villages of Kleve and Nutteln, in the west by Vaalermoor, in the east by Moorhusen and in the south by Neuendorf-Sachsenbande. It is a raised bog that once stretched from Heiligenstedten to the Kudensee (Dithmarschen). In its core area, high-quality and species-rich remains of raised bogs have been preserved.

The area, also known as the “Great Moor” in old documents, was not included in the dike for a long time. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the bog was heavily interfered with by starting with drainage, mining the black peat for the production of fuel and transporting it over the floodplains and rivers. In the middle of the 19th century settlement began to increase, which intensified the drainage and cultivation of the moor. A colony of settlers developed on the moor southwest of the villages of Nutteln and Vaale, which led to the establishment of the municipality of Vaalermoor on June 16, 1857.

The "Herrenmoor bei Kleve" is the oldest moor nature reserve in the Steinburg district. A core area of 13 hectares was designated as a protected area as early as 1938. Through the purchase of the district and the Nature Conservation Foundation, the nature reserve has now grown to 213 hectares. As part of the coherent European "Natura 2000" network, the Herrenmoor has been reported to the EU as a flora-fauna-habitat area (FFH area).
