Bench with a view of the Ems floodplains

Highlight • Viewpoint

Here on the beautiful bench on the dike you have a really beautiful view of the Ems and the adjacent meadows. A great place to slow down. Enjoy the peace and nature. Simply great.
You can reach it from the foot of the dike via a staircase. Just leave the bikes behind, go up the stairs and enjoy the view.

Ems Side Arm "Alte Ems"

Highlight • River

First of all, I am pleased that over 100 cyclists now recommend this highlight with me. You're welcome!
The Ems branch runs from Herbrum to the beginning of Aschendorf. Its existence as a side arm results from the Herbrumer Schleuse, which only made it possible to decouple the upper reaches of the Ems from the tides through the creation of the Dortmund-Ems Canal at this point, and thus also made it possible to carry cargo traffic on the Ems in this way. As a result, damming became necessary on the Ems branch.
As a special highlight we will also find the Sehel airfield of the same name "Alte Ems", whose take-off and landing runway extends right up to the Ems cycle path. On weekends you can sometimes watch exciting take-off or landing sequences here. In any case, the view from the Sperrwerrk on the Emslauf in both directions is fun.

Tidal weir Herbrum

Highlight • Other

Ems weir, Pünte near Lehe, on the way along the DEK...this river can have countless names.

However, the tidal weir here on the tidal Ems is the transition to the freshwater area.

The weir is the first barrier encountered by migratory aquatic animals trying to move from the tidal Ems to the middle reaches of the river—for example, to spawn there, or, like eels, to ascend from their spawning and hatching grounds in the sea into the rivers, where they spend their time as adults before migrating back to their spawning grounds. This example shows how important the river "migration route" is for fish to complete their life cycle.
There is a shelter and a fishing station at the weir.
