Frankenberg Town Hall

Highlight • Monument

The town hall of Frankenberg is an impressive building: lots of half-timbering, lots of slate and a total of ten towers! It was built in the 16th century and then underwent some structural changes. This is how the slate was put in place to protect the underlying framework.

Every Saturday from 8.30 a.m. to 12 p.m. the weekly market of the country women takes place in front of the town hall.

Church of Our Lady, Frankenberg

Highlight • Religious Site

Built from 1286 to 1380. A Gothic building based on the Marburg Elisabeth church, which completely burnt down in 1476 during the great Frankenberg fire. After a Hessen-wide appeal for donations by Landgrave Heinrich III. she was restored from 1478.

Burgberg, Frankenberg

Highlight • Historical Site

In the Middle Ages, a fortress was built on the Burgberg to secure the wine route from Frankfurt to Frankenberg. In 1376 the castle burned down and was not rebuilt. From the castle hill you have a beautiful view over the city of Frankenberg. You can still see the remains of an open-air theater from the Franconian period and the remains of the city wall. The Frankenberg elevated water reservoir, built in 1899, is also located on the castle hill.

Pontoons on the Eder River

Highlight • River

When the weather is nice, you can sit on the pontoons on the new riverside promenade in Frankenberg, put your feet in the river and relax. It's even better with a to-go cocktail, which you can get relatively cheaply in the neighboring restaurant "Geronimo". The Eder is so clean here that you can see the many fish with the naked eye. Ducks and Egyptian geese can also be found here en masse. If you walk further along the beautifully designed promenade with its many seats to the former St. Georgenberg monastery, you can now also see the renaturalized Nemphe stream, which was concreted over in the 1970s. Very nice!

Frankenberg Wildlife Park

Highlight • Structure

The wildlife park Frankenberg is an excellent destination for animal lovers. The plant differs fundamentally from many other zoos. Instead of several small enclosures penned here, the moufflons, red deer, fallow deer and sika deer walk freely through a large area - and you through the middle. So you can get close to the animal inhabitants. Only the curious wild boars have their own fenced area.

The park is open 24 hours a day all year and does not cost entry.

The Frankenberger Blickwinkel is the first certified premium city hiking trail in Germany.

The circular hiking trail begins in the picturesque old town of Frankenberg (Eder) at the beautiful, 10-tower, more than 500-year-old town hall, leads to the Church of Our Lady, over the castle hill and to the former monastery of St. Georgenberg.

The Frankenberg viewpoint... on my agenda since 2021 & today it was almost canceled immediately after starting.
This path is a premium hiking trail that currently only lives up to its "premium" designation between the forest road and the witch's tower. Before and behind it, both the signage and the gpx file & display board are incorrect... sometimes even inadequate. …

Today we drove to Frankenberg because the first premium city hike is being advertised there.
We parked in the Geismarer Straße near the school. After a few meters there was the witch tower, from which you get a nice overview of Frankenberg. We then continue towards the town hall with its 10 towers. This is also the official start of …

Inspired by the recommendation of a nice resident of this lovely town on the Eder, I went on the "Frankenberger Blickwinkel" tour on Good Friday.

Except for the lack of sun, which said goodbye just in time for the start of the day, it was a very nice little hike with a number of highlights. I captured it all in …

A trip to northern Hesse to the half-timbered town of Frankenberg (Eder). The 'Frankenberger Blickwinkel' circular route encompasses all of the city's highlights.
Due to the onset of heavy rain, the tour had to be shortened by the last km.

After a good three years, it was time again to check whether any changes had been made to the premium hiking trail "Frankenberger Blickwinkel." This is especially the case in the Eder floodplain. The newly created branch of the Eder, which meanders through the floodplain, deserves special mention.
