Church of São Sebastião, Câmara de Lobos

The center of Câmara de Lobos invites you for a walk in the unique atmosphere of the city. The city center is rich in traditions, stories, and of course, also rich in historical heritage. One of the most outstanding elements is the São Sebastião Church, which is already six centuries old.
In 1426, by order of Henry the Navigator, the then chapel of São Sebastião was erected in honor of Saint Sebastian. Later, in the 17th and 18th centuries, the growth of the local population led to work being carried out on this temple. The chapel had to be redesigned and enlarged, thus creating the current São Sebastião Church.
This religious monument is in the Baroque style. It consists of three naves and a main altar with gilded carvings. In the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament, there is an 18th-century tile panel depicting the Agnus Dei.
On the exterior, the family coat of arms of João Gonçalves Zarco, the navigator who discovered the island and lived here between 1420 and 1424, can be seen in cobblestone. On January 20th, the festival in honor of São Sebastião is celebrated here.
