Tainaros

Highlight • Historical Site

Greece's most southern mainland point has had symbolic cultural and strategic military significance for thousands of years. Ruins and traces of human use abound, but the only surviving structure are some crumbling walls of the Death Oracle of Poseidon Tainarios, God of the sea, not just for sailors.
There are many faint traces of ancient houses and port fortifications cut into the rocks still visible. Today the only other inhabitants, particularly in winter, are a few cows. A rough 1 km hiking trail leads to the lighthouse at the tip of the Cape Tenaro, also known as Cape Matapan ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cape_Matapan ), the second southernmost point in mainland Europe (after Cape Tarifa in Spain).

This is as far south as you can bike without a boat in Greece: Cape Tenaro, also known as Caps Matapan ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cape_Matapan ) is the second most southern cape point in mainland Europe (after Cape Tarifa in Spain), the most southern place in Europe is a Greek island.
Fittingly the only surviving structure from thousands of years of human use is the Death Oracle of Poseidon Tainarios, God of the sea, not just for sailors.
There are many faint traces of ancient houses and port fortifications cut into the rocks still visible. Today the only other inhabitants, particularly in winter, are a few cows. A rough 1 km hiking trail leads to the lighthouse on the tip of the cape.

Mosaics at Greco-Roman villa 🏛️

Highlight • Historical Site

Right along the hiking trail to Cape Tenaro lie these unprotected ruins of an antique villa with beautiful floor mosaics. The villa had spectacular ocean views at the small strategically important harbour that once served the outpost at Greece's southernmost mainland point. It might have also contained a small Poseidon temple, as did many houses on the coast.

Cape Tenaro Lighthouse

Highlight • Monument

When walking through partly stony and steep terrain you should already be equipped with good footwear and towards the end of the path is also a certain surefootedness helpful. In the preseason you have this beautiful spot mostly for yourself and can enjoy the beautiful view relaxed.

Lighthouse Trail — Cape Tenaro

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

This short 1-mile (1.6 km) trail leads to the iconic lighthouse at Cape Tenaro, also known as Cape Matapan, the second most southern point in mainland Europe (after Cape Tarifa in Spain) and the southernmost place on the Greek mainland.

The trail starts from the parking at the end of the paved road with the archaeologically interesting ruins of the Death Oracle of Poseidon Tainarios, God of the sea, not just for sailors.

There are many faint traces of ancient houses and port fortifications cut into the rocks along the way. Today, the only other inhabitants, particularly in winter, are a few cows.

The trail is mostly flat, but has some rocky sections on the last few hundred yards, with a bit of scrambling right before reaching the lighthouse, which is surrounded by a nice observation terrace.

You can return the same way or follow an even more rocky, faint trail a little higher up on the gently sloping ridge, making it a loop back to the start.

Hike in the blazing sun to the southernmost mainland point of GR

We walked along a rocky path to Cape Tenaro, the second southernmost point in Europe and the southernmost point on the Greek mainland. The closer we got to the lighthouse, the rockier the path became and the wind blew harder. In some places, surefootedness was required. Right at the lighthouse, it was calm again.

Hike through a barren, rocky landscape to the "end of the world".
Cape Tenaro is the southernmost cape on mainland Greece and the second southernmost in Europe after Tarifa in Spain. In ancient times, the city of Tenaro was built here around a temple, the sanctuary and mortuary oracle of the god Poseidon. Remains of a floor mosaic are exposed …

Actually, it wasn't a hike, but a walk, only 5 km there and back. However, I was well equipped with hiking boots and poles. There is hardly any elevation gain, but the ground is not flat.
I can highly recommend this hike and advise everyone to take a bathing suit with them, it really is a delightful bay.
I've uploaded …

Only 43 km north of Gibraltar (southernmost point of mainland Europe)... And here the sea is said to be 4,000 m deep. I didn't dive down to verify that statement...

Unfortunately, Komoot didn't record any of the sections. It's definitely worth walking to the lighthouse.
