Ascent to the Gimpelhaus hut

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Nice trail, not difficult. Partly steep and many switchbacks. Again and again the forest clears and reveals views of Nesselwängle up to the Krinnenspitze

Gimpelhaus

Highlight • Mountain Hut

The Gimpelhaus is a great place for hikers to explore the area around the Rote Flüh and the Gimpel. But above all, the large mountain hut is the base for all climbers trying on the surrounding cliffs. With 50 beds and 170 beds in the mattress camp, there is definitely enough space for ambitious mountain adventurers.

View of Rote Flüh and Gimpel

Highlight • Viewpoint

The Gimpel and the Rote Flüh are also affectionately known as 'Tannheimer Dolomiten' with their nearly vertical slopes and extensive Karfeldern. If you wander up the dramatic slopes to the summit, you'll be impressed by the scenery.

View of Gimpel

Highlight • Viewpoint

The Gimpel is one of the peaks in the Tannheimer Mountains. Its summit is formed by steep rock faces to the south and north, rising approximately 300 m and 650 m respectively. It is connected to the Rote Flüh by the Judenscharte, a high ridge between the two mountains, to the west. In front of the Gimpel south face extends the Gimpel southeast promontory, with the Zwerchenwand adjoining it to the east.

Rote Flüh

Highlight • Summit

Impressive panoramic views over Lake Halden and the Tannheimer Valley, including the imposing Gimpelwand. After crossing the cirque between Gimpel and Rot Flüh, the rocky but well-secured climb to the summit begins. Here, you can watch the chamois and their climbing skills, as well as the climbers attempting the Gimpelwand.

Starting point is the hiking car park between Haller and Nesselwängle (fee applies).
Refreshments are available on the ascent and descent at the Gimpelhaus (gimpelhaus.at). The Gimpelhaus also offers overnight accommodation (open during the summer months).

Friedberger Via Ferrata

Highlight • Climb

The scenically very impressive Friedberg via ferrata in the Tannheim mountains is a popular "test tour" to climb the Rote Flüh in a more exposed way. The climb is usually made from the Schartschrofen - you climb the difficult part on the descent, the opposite direction from the Gimpelhaus is also very popular. From the summit you have a great view of the Haldensee and the Gimpel, which is right next to it.

Schartschrofen Summit

Highlight • Summit

The Schartschrofen rises majestically to 1,968 meters above sea level and is a striking rocky peak within the Tannheim Mountains, a subgroup of the Allgäu Alps. It is located northwest of the Rote Flüh and south of the Füssener Jöchl. Two designated hiking trails lead to the Schartschrofen. The normal route starts in the Tannheimer Tal and leads over the Füssener Jöchl, although it is also possible to use the mountain railway in Grän up to here. From there we continue to Hallgernjoch and finally to the summit. The Friedberg via ferrata offers an exciting alternative, which climbs the Schartschrofen via its impressive 150 meter high southeast ridge. This via ferrata is secured throughout with wire ropes and initially leads along the ridge before turning to the southern flank after a crossing and finally leading through a gully to the summit.
