Missunde Ferry on the Schlei

Highlight • Rest Area

"Ferryman get it". For more than 500 years (first mention in 1471), there is a ferry at the Missunder Enge. One suspects, however, that many people were transferred by boat from one side to the other much earlier. Already in 1115, Missunde is called "Versundt" in historical sources. During the Schleswig-Holstein survey and the German-Danish war, the narrowest part of the Schlei was a strategically important place and often fought over. A documentation of these events can be found in the Village Museum Brodersby, Missunder Fährstraße 4.
Perhaps interesting is this report: de.wikisource.org/wiki/Von_Schleswig_nach_Missunde
Today, in peaceful times, we can use the ferry as a shortcut to get to the Schwansener side. On the ferry fit max. 8 cars, with trailer even less. After the start, the Missunde II jerks and twitches once on its steel hawsers (it is a cable ferry) and chugs comfortably to the other shore. There are nostalgic feelings. On the way back the same procedere. With a fare of just € 0.60 / adult on foot a cheap pleasure.
On the Angelner side there is a cozy snack for fish sandwiches and simple small dishes. My fish sandwich was delicious, rolls fresh from the oven, warm and crispy, fish fresh and tender (sherry-sild). Totally nice, friendly elderly landlords and a nice environment with tables and benches inside and outside, as well as a beautifully landscaped outdoor area (with flowers and children's playground) What more could you ask for. Open: Tuesday-Sunday approx. 12.00-approx.19.30, closed on Mondays.
If that's not enough, head to the ferry house at Missunde. Since 1805 there is an inn at this place. Seasonally different opening times. On offer also accommodation and rooms for celebrations. On the homepage you will find the menu as pdf-download. Reads himself promising. I think the prices are not too high for an economy with such an exposed location.

Great opportunity for a short break right on the beach, before a somewhat exhausting Plattenweg direction Schleswig comes.

The reconstruction of the mill on the Freiheit in Schleswig began in February 2012, the opening of the Dutch mill took place three years later, on Whit Monday 2015 as part of the German Mill Day.

The Nicola mill is part of a foundation that has set itself the task of preserving the historical cultural monument as a "functioning museum" and making it accessible to the public. In addition, it shows the miller's trade, which has been very common in the north for the past two centuries. The Holländermühle complements the holistic offer of the district "Auf der Freiheit". As a cultural institution, it is reminiscent of the history of the windmills in Schleswig Holstein.

The historic, refurbished 1861 octagon from Legan was used to rebuild the two-story gallery hollander with venticant and compass rose. The missing parts have been rebuilt according to the original blueprints. The mill contains a complete set-up with a windmill gear and a motor gear, in connection with a Wülfel gear and a hill clutch. A 3 ton "Heckenmüller" backfill mill from 1952 from Itzehoe-Sude is installed in the storage facility.

Holm Fishermen's Quarter, Schleswig

Highlight • Settlement

The men from the houses with their "Utluchten" (three-sided bay window) and "Klöndören" (half-divided doors) meet every evening for a bite before the "foot on the spar". This is a small alley that leads directly to the water.

Schleswig Harbour

Highlight • Structure

The location of the Schleswig city harbor is excellent. The old town with the cathedral and the old fishing settlement "Holm" border directly on the harbor. The shopping street with numerous shops is only a few minutes' walk away. Varied gastronomy can be found directly at the harbor, bike rental and excursions on the Schlei complete the offer.

Highlight • Viewpoint

The view compensates a little for the very poor condition of the cycle path on Schleidörferstrasse.
