The monument is dedicated to the professional group of railway workers from the former administrative districts of Bromberg, Posen and Danzig, who died as conscript soldiers in World War I and in border battles in 1919. The monument does not represent any military unit, regiment or branch of the military.

As early as 1921, the civil servants in the new home town of Frankfurt (Oder) wanted to create a monument for their fallen comrades. It took ten years before the construction of the monument could begin with donations from the railway associations of the Eastern administrative district.

The inauguration took place on July 3, 1932. The Fürstenberg brothers created it as stonemasons and sculptors, and the architect was Reichsbahnrat W. Bering. The three steles symbolize the administrative areas of Posen, Bromberg and Danzig, the base the Reichsbahn Directorate East.

The Anger, initially a goose meadow in the fishing suburb of Guben and a parade ground since the time of "Old Fritz", was rededicated by the city of Frankfurt (Oder) into a magnificent garden area. It was now up to Kießling to give this a worthy conclusion with the planned residential development at the northern end of the Anger. Kießling faced several challenges at this exposed location. So St. Gertraud could not be covered and the western main entrance of the church had to remain freely accessible. A square had to be created on the north side, corresponding to the church and the Kellenspring development. All views of the group of objects were to be viewed as front views, so that the farmyards had to be moved invisibly to the inside. When designing the floor plan, it was essential to take into account the particularly large apartment with adjoining garden for the President of the East Reichsbahn Directorate. In addition to the normal living and economic rooms, this was also equipped with a reception hall, ballroom, library, music room and guest rooms. The adjoining apartments were intended for the closer employees of the "superior service".

Kießling had the right architectural idea for all of these specifications. Viewed from the south, the group of objects impressively crowns the Anger and, in my opinion, is the most beautiful ensemble in the city of Frankfurt (Oder).

The Anger is a park in the Guben suburb and was created on the former parade ground. In the park there is a Soviet memorial with a war cemetery. On the north side is the Kießlingbau. At the south end is the pavilion, near which is the stadium of friendship.

Professor Peter Imanuel Hartmann (1727–1791, professor of pathology, therapy, chemistry and botany) had the house built in 1785 for 2,800 thalers. The house owes its name to the small Belvedere tower (21 m high) on the roof. The tower served Prof. Hartmann as an observatory. This "Observatory Astronomicum" was the first observatory in Frankfurt (Oder).

The postal address is Lindenstrasse 28, where you can also find the impressive front of the building, but the back (Gubener Strasse) is also absolutely worth seeing.
