Leienfels Castle Ruins

The Leienfels castle ruins were a late medieval aristocratic castle, immediately northwest of the village of Leienfels of the same name. The ruins can be reached from the village of Leienfels in a northwesterly direction. The site of the former castle begins at the end of the town. The castle, whose name probably derives from Löwenfels, is one of the later castles founded in Franconian Switzerland and was probably only built at the beginning of the 14th century. Seibot I von Egloffstein is believed to be the builder and can be traced back to between 1285 and 1332.

The castle was first mentioned in documents in 1372. After a feud, knight Götz von Egloffstein had to undertake to serve the Bishop of Bamberg with his part of the castle, which had until then been free. The castle was badly damaged in the Peasants' War in 1525. However, the occupation under Otto von Mengersdorf was able to prevent a conquest. The castle was restored immediately. In 1610 the complex was already described as no longer habitable. During the Thirty Years' War in 1643, repairing the castle was no longer considered worthwhile. In 1646 the bricks were removed from the remaining buildings, the remaining buildings were used as a source of materials for Pottenstein Castle and the complex was left to decay.
