St. George's Church (Eisenach)

Highlight • Religious Site

The first mention of the church was in 1196. The Gothic church received its basic appearance in 1515. In it Martin Luther preached at the time of the Reformation, and Johann Sebastian Bach was baptized in it. The tower was added to the church in the Neo-Baroque style in the years 1899-1902.

Georgsbrunnen (Eisenach)

Highlight • Monument

In 1549, the sculptural sandstone figure of the knight and dragon slayer St. George was created in the Eisenach workshop of the then city architect Hans Leonhard. The knight, reproduced in reduced proportions, wears a gilded suit of armor from the 16th century and fights a dragon or lindworm at his feet. The figure's armor was probably cast from a tournament suit of armor and corresponds in detail to models from the period between 1550 and 1560. The rural population streaming into the city on market days may have introduced the name "Güldenmannsbrunnen", which was already in use in the Middle Ages.

Creutznacher House

Highlight • Historical Site

The Creutznacher House is a listed building on the south side of the market square in the town of Eisenach in Thuringia. The postal address is Markt 9.

The wealthy merchant and patrician Conrad Creutznacher had the Renaissance-style town house, later known as the Creutznacher House, built next to St. George's Church between 1507 and 1539. The entrance portal to the market square was built in 1559 on the site of the older driveway. The house served as a residential and commercial building as well as a warehouse. The design corresponds to that of the neighboring Luther House and Town Hall buildings, designed by city architect Hans Leonhardt.

Around 1600, Duke Johann Ernst of Saxony-Eisenach acquired the building and had it integrated into his residential palace on the esplanade, which occupied the south side of the market square, then known as the Wednesday market. When the residence was partially demolished around 1742, the residence building was preserved and served from then on as an administrative building for the financial and judicial authorities of the Grand Duchy of Saxony-Weimar-Eisenach and the state of Thuringia, for which it was rebuilt several times.
The initially plastered half-timbering of the upper floors was exposed during a restoration in 1885. Plans from the 1930s to house the Carl Alexander Library in the Creutznacher House were not implemented. The building, as well as the historic buildings in the area, were damaged in the air raids on Eisenach in World War II. The damage was largely repaired by 1950. During the GDR era, the building served as the administrative building of VEB Kraftverkehr.
