Karmelklooster Zenderen

The Karmelklooster in Zenderen has existed for more than 160 years. In 1856 the Carmelites came to Twente from Boxmeer. The monastery gradually grew into a community that has meant a lot to Twente. From there, monasteries arose in Oldenzaal, Hengelo, Almelo and Enschede. Catholic secondary education also got off the ground in the above-mentioned places thanks to the Carmelites. The Sancti Alberti gymnasium was founded in Zenderen, where many future Carmelites received their secondary education. The basic pastoral care also became an important task for the fathers and they provided assistance in the neighborhood parishes far and wide.
