Winsford Ford and Footbridge

Highlight • River

The ford is easy to drive through in a normal car (if you have to), but there is a footbridge for pedestrians. There is a really great tea room right next to it

Royal Oak Inn, Exmoor

Highlight • Pub

This pub is one of the most photographed in the country and is often used as an illustration in travel guides. It's really really pretty, I don't know if it's any good... I've been here about 6 times in 12 years, they were closed every time 🤷

Winsford Packhorse Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

This delightful little bridge is slightly hidden away but is well worth seeking out. It's a medieval packhorse bridge and spans the pretty Winn Brook in the village of Winsford. These packhorse bridges are dotted all over Devon, particularly in Exmoor and Dartmoor, and their modest size is quite amazing.

St Mary Magdalene Church, Exmoor

Highlight • Historical Site

13th century Norman church. Dedicated to Mary Magdalene, rather simple and bright on the inside and with an ancient cemetery around it. We liked it!

Bridge Cottage Tea Room

Highlight • Cafe

We once had a wonderfully delicious cream tea with all the trimmings in the beautiful garden, right next to the ford. Over the years we have tried again and again to repeat the experience... Unfortunately, always in vain, because the great tea room is only open very irregularly. But it's definitely worth a try if you're in Winsford!
P. S. We were there again and were once again thrilled by this lovely place. Unfortunately the garden will close forever at the end of October 23, and the tea room (inside) will close on December 18th. The owners are retiring. Shame, shame, shame, it was one of the most delightful places for cream tea on Exmoor.

November 4, 2021,Winsford - Nethercote, circular
Free car parking in Winsford, opposite the garage.
Recommend following this route clockwise to get the bulk of the ascent, up Bye Hill, out of the way at the beginning, then it's mostly level around Bye Common followed by a descent to the river at Nethercote and an easy level stroll along the bank of the Exe back to Winsford.
