Taubergießen Wetlands

Highlight • Natural

If you walk quietly through the Rhine Forest, you will also see special animals. Here I had recently seen a brook and its five cubs swimming through the Old Rhine.

Old Rhine Taubergießen

Highlight • River

A wonderful piece of nature. In winter, when there are no leaves, you can also look into the woods. And the mosquitoes are gone. Another plus!

March 2, 2025,Gänseweg - Oberhausen (Taubergießen)
Today we had a short tour planned in Taubergießen, right next to yesterday's tour.

Above all, it was supposed to be an adventure, and we were particularly keen on crossing the ford at km 1.4. I wanted to test whether you could get through the wet cold with dry feet without suffering the same fate as Barbara (komoot.com/de-de/tour/2072276477). 🤷‍♂️

We started our hike at the hiking car park in Rheinhausen. In pleasant weather, we set off toward the Rhine dam. After just a few steps, the view opened up over the expansive floodplain landscape, and we could hear the first calls of wild geese – a fitting start to the Goose Trail.

A peaceful hike in the Taubergiessen nature reserve along the Gänseweg (Goose Trail) near Rheinhausen. Orchids aren't yet in bloom at this time of year, but there's plenty of wild garlic. Along the section of the trail by the Leopold Canal, you can also observe many different water birds.

I had chosen such a beautiful path through the middle of the valley, and I was standing at the junction, reading about one of the "highlights": it was a water-filled ford and you should either wear rubber boots or go barefoot. 🙈
The return trip was accordingly more boring than planned, and most of it was in full sun, which …

...and we got wet the last kilometer after all...

Special experiences today included the two stag beetles, the extended family of Canada geese with 12 chicks, and the miniature frog - wonderful.

This Tauber Gießen round was really ambivalent! 🤷‍♂️
Up to km 3.2, the tour ran as usual through beautiful terrain in the Taubergiessen nature reserve. 👌

From then on there was a somewhat ambivalent phase...
My planned route ended as a dead end in front of a stream - so I went back on the muddy path.
When we arrived …
