Arezzo Railway Station 1915
The Arezzo - Fossato di Vico Railway
In order to connect Arezzo with the eastern part of the province, a consortium was formed in 1880 to build this line, which would have an outlet on the main Rome - Orte - Ancona line. Finally, after two years of proposals, construction began. The difficult location of the intersected areas allowed for the introduction of the 950 mm narrow gauge, due to the small curvature radii (80 meters) and the steep gradients (30x1000). The chosen route connected Arezzo with Fossato di Vico, passing through Anghiari, Sansepolcro, Umbertide (where there was correspondence with the Ferrovia Centrale Umbra, inaugurated in 1915), and Gubbio, for a total length of 133.7 kilometers. The project was carried out under concession to the Società per la Ferrovia dell'Appennino Centrale (FAC) and the railway company. In April 1886, the first section from Fossato to Città di Castello was opened, followed a month later by the section to Anghiari. To reach Arezzo, it was necessary to wait until the following August due to some problems encountered during the construction of the Scopetone Pass.
