Castelsardo was founded by the Genoese under the name Castel Genovese at the beginning of the twelfth century. In 1448, after the Spanish conquest, it was renamed Castel Aragonais.
The castle still dominates the place today and is located on a rocky cape which is washed by the sea on three sides. Thanks to the well-preserved ramparts and small staircases, Castelsardo has retained its unique character.
