Wismar's Historic Old Town

Highlight • Historical Site

Beautiful old town in Wismar. Turn off the bicycle and explore the center on foot. At the harbor there is delicious fish.

Wismar Old Town

Highlight • Historical Site

The old town is beautiful, even the paths are "old" and consist of cobblestones - which makes cycling a bit more complicated.

Marktplatz Wismar

Highlight • Monument

The Wasserkunst, a pavilion-like, free-standing building directly on the market square in Wismar, is considered the landmark of the Hanseatic city. The complex building was built from 1579 to 1602 according to plans by the Utrecht master builder Philipp Brandin in the Dutch Renaissance style. The waterworks served to supply the city with drinking water until 1897.
The banners in Latin and German tell of the drinking water supply in earlier times.

Old Harbour Wismar

Highlight • Settlement

The Old Harbor in Wismar is a great place to stroll, eat ice cream and watch ships. From here you can take harbor tours in the Bay of Wismar or board a ship to the island of Poel. More and more cruise ships are also docking in Wismar in the summer months.

Be sure to keep your eyes peeled for the "Wissemara". The replica of the Poel cog from the 14th century is something special. You can visit the bulbous sailing ship while it is moored. The crew regularly sets off on sailing trips. Click on this link for the dates: poeler-kogge.de.

Wismar Old Town

The Hanseatic city of Wismar (Low German: Wismer) is located on the Baltic Sea coast in the Nordwestmecklenburg district of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, at the southern end of the Bay of Wismar, protected by the island of Poel. It is the sixth-largest city in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and the largest of the state's 18 medium-sized towns. The historic old towns of Stralsund and Wismar were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in June 2002.

August 9, 2025,Wismar - Boltenhagen und Hinterland
Today, in great weather, we set off with friends from Wismar via Zierow, the Wohlenberger Wiek, and Zierow to Boltenhagen.
After a refreshing dip in the Baltic Sea, our route took us back to Wismar via the hinterland.
