View of Königshütte

Highlight • Viewpoint

From the castle ruins you have a beautiful view of Königshütte. If you walk down the path behind the castle, you will find out that the Bode flows via the Elbe and the North Sea into the Atlantic.

The dam was built on the Bode as an 18 m high concrete gravity dam for drinking water supply and flood protection, with a war-related interruption from 1939 to 1943 and 1952 to 1956, but is also used to raise low water levels and generate electricity. The hydroelectric plant has a nominal output of 60 kW and generates 0.18 GWh per year.
The slightly curved wall is 108 m long and has a volume of 13,500 m³. It can be overflowed almost across its entire width. A fishbelly flap is installed in one field, which can be lowered by 1.5 m to relieve flooding.
The reservoir has a volume of 1.2 million m³ and covers an area of 32 hectares. Part of the water is channeled from here through a 1,795 m long tunnel to the Rappbode Dam. The other part flows into the Bode to the Wendefurth dam, where it rejoins the water from the Rappbode dam.

The large open-cast mine is not beautiful but it is impressive to look at.

Königshütte Waterfall (HWN 40)

Highlight • Waterfall

A very beautiful and mostly very calm waterfall. The rest area nearby offers you enough seats. Above the waterfall you look down on Königshütte. There is also a stamp office for the Harzer hiking nobility up here. If you come here by car, you can park in front of the railway bridge on a large gravel area. If you have more time, after a few hundred meters you will find the Rabensteine, from which you have a magnificent view of the Hochharz.

We started in windy weather. We had a great time hiking this trail, albeit with a light shower.
Not suitable for strollers.
After the hike, we went to the Grüne Gurke (Green Cucumber) in Wernigerode. Yes, that's really the name of the restaurant! Super tasty, affordable, and large (really large) portions.

Once again with my daughter on a stamp hunt in the Harz. 😃 Parking and start/finish in the middle of Elbingerode, right next to the local history room. Not quite as strenuous this time but still nice. It was actually a circuit around the Fels-Werke open-cast mine. The 5 stamps were in the first two thirds of the route. Unfortunately, …

Another long weekend in the Harz. This time in Tanne. Our first tour started in Elbingerode with a fairly fresh wind. A beautiful tour up to the Trogfurther Bridge. Wide gravel paths on the last 4 kilometers. The lucky doll lying in the stamp box HWN 39 is a wonderful idea. Hopefully it will stay there for a long time.

We had planned this tour a long time ago, something always came up. Today it finally worked and I have to say, it was a nice round with varied paths and remarkable stamping points 😊 highly recommended. We parked the car in the center of the village 👍🏻

To collect four more stamps today, we headed to Elbingerode. In light drizzle🌦, we first went to the Felswerk HWN 39.
After a quick look at the open-cast mine, we continued towards Trogfurther Brücke HWN 42. Along the Königshütte Dam, we climbed to the Königshütte castle ruins HWN 41, where we took a short break🍺. Then we descended to Königshütte …
