Lahn riverside in Marburg

Highlight • River

Marburg very quiet and idyllic, postcard pictures are possible here - ideally very early in the morning.

The Weidenhäuser Bridge is the oldest Lahn bridge in the central Hessian city of Marburg. The first stone bridge over the Lahn stood at this point as early as the middle of the 13th century. In the Middle Ages it was called the City Bridge or Long Bridge. Today's 4-span arch bridge made of sandstone dates from 1892. It connects the western old town with the eastern district of Weidenhausen and is still one of the most important traffic arteries in Marburg. Completely renovated in 2019.

The Upper Town (Old Town) really has a large number of historically beautiful half-timbered houses to offer. Even if you leave the main path you will find beautiful half-timbered houses in the sometimes very narrow streets.

Marburg Old Town (Upper Town)

Highlight • Historical Site

The numerous winding streets of the old-fashioned upper town allow you to discover something new again and again. If you really want to explore everything, you should plan several days.

Landgrave's Castle, Marburg

Highlight • Castle

After an ascent via the castle stairs, you are rewarded with a fabulous view over the city and the surrounding area. To the left, you can see the former princely chancellery, which today houses the university's collection of religious studies. Through the archway next to the guardhouse, you enter the castle square with the former smithy, stables, and armoury, and now have the castle in its full glory before you. Via the inner courtyard, you reach the museum. If you walk around the castle counter-clockwise, you get a beautiful view of the other part of the city. On the north side, slightly below, stands the Hexenturm (1487), which was temporarily used as a prison. A stone bridge leads into the castle park, where parts of the former fortifications can still be seen. The underground casemates can be visited with a guided tour.

I went astray, photos show exactly what it was like: overwhelming, I'm even more in love, is that possible… yes!! This is so magical, beautiful and that sunrise, I just cried…how lucky that I was there and got to experience that and pictures don't show the full experience (so go experience it yourself!!!)

Great November tour. Unfortunately the GPS lost its "orientation" in the upper town and marked a pointless route. In reality it was only about 14km, but it made for a pleasant day's hike.

We only knew Marburg from driving through on the B3.
Today, however, we wanted to get to know the much-advertised old town and the Lahnberge. We started at a car park near the train station (€6 for 5 hours, max. parking time!!) - would we manage it?? We wanted to go straight up to the Kaiser Wilhelm Tower (Spiegelslust Tower) …

The first tour after the stupid infection. Since the doctor has forbidden me to exercise, today a leisurely little tour through the forest.
