Schlüsselburg barn quarter

Highlight • Historical Site

The Scheunenviertel, which still exists today, in the Schlüsselburg district of Petershagen is a rural cultural asset of supra-regional importance. The oldest of the 26 barns still in existence today can be dated to between 1600 and 1700. The "Humbke", the highest elevation in the area, was chosen as the location. In addition to numerous floods caused by various Weser floods in historical times, a striking number of fires also destroyed the place.

The Scheunenviertel is mostly privately owned. A barn renovated in 2012 now serves as an information barn and provides information about the Scheunenviertel and the work of the "Dat Schünenviertel" association.

The church was built in 1585 by Drosten Ludolf von Klencke and the council of the town of Schlüsselburg. In 1864 the tower was raised. The church is a small hall building with a polygonal end and west tower. The interior is covered by a vaulted wooden ceiling.

Schlüsselburg Castle

Highlight • Castle

A beautiful example of the Weser Renaissance. Schlüsselburg was founded in 1335. In that year, the Bishop of Minden built the fortified Slotenburg House to protect his western territory. The manor house was built between 1581 and 1585 by Ludolf von Klencke in the Weser Renaissance style. The castle is now privately owned and can only be viewed from the outside.

The Schlüsselburg barrage at water kilometer 236.6 is a dam with an associated hydroelectric power plant. It was built in the 1950s. The weir was built in 1956 and consists of two fields, each 40 meters wide. At the same time, a run-of-river power plant was built and has been in operation since 1956.

The hydroelectric power plant was originally operated by the PreußenElektra company, which was later absorbed into the EON Group. Through an exchange of shares with the Norwegian energy company Statkraft, the latter has been the owner and operator of the power plant since January 1, 2009.
