North West Walls, Festivalpark Werchter

Highlight • Monument

Crossing the Werchter festival site by bike is a pretty special experience. Some of it is meadow all year round, part is paved and it's surrounded by MTB trails.

Make sure to check out the North West Walls art project, a striking feature of the Festivalpark in Werchter (Belgium) since 2014. Under the curatorship of Belgian artist Arne Quinze, the North West Walls are brought to life by a new set of street artists every year.

Officially, the Demer flows into the Dijle, but at the confluence of the two, in Werchter, the Dijle is a smaller stream than the Demer. A possible explanation for why the river continues to be called Dijle is that the Dijle flows through the historically more important city of Leuven than the Demer with Aarschot and Diest.

This Bailey Bridge is an established architectural heritage that was indeed only constructed in the early 1950s as an exercise by sappers. The link where you can consult this yourself can be found at inventaris.onroerenderfgoed.be/erfgoedobjecten/216479

There are several picnic benches on the north side of the bridge (and therefore the Demerdijk Noord). On the south side you are just a few hundred meters from the place where the Winge flows into the Demer.

Highlight • Climb

The Muur van Heikant is a short but intense climb that challenges cyclists with a gradient of up to 15%. This paved road winds through Rotselaar and requires perseverance as you climb between open fields and scattered trees, catching glimpses of the Flemish landscape here and there.

’s Hertogenmolens, Aarschot

Highlight • Monument

This watermill complex, founded around 1510 by Willem de Croy, lord of Aarschot, was the most impressive in the region and connected the northern part of the city with the southern part.
The mill complex was uniquely located, it served as a bridge over the Demer and served as a grain mill, bark and glass mill, but also as a defense of the city.
Vessels that passed under the central arch had to pay taxes. The rings in the wall, where the ships moored, are still visible.
In 1970 the mill was partly destroyed by a fire. In 1986, the 's Hertogenmolens became a protected monument and the surrounding area a classified village view.
