Nabarniz Village

Highlight • Settlement

It is located at the foot of Mount Iluntzar, and the average altitude of the municipality is 360m, the highest in the region. Starting in the 10th century, the neighborhoods as we know them now began to take shape, each one around its own hermitage: the Ikazurieta neighborhood with its San Cristobal hermitage, the Uribarri neighborhood around the San Miguel hermitage, the San Gregorio in the Merika neighbourhood, Santiago in the Lekerika neighbourhood, and finally the Elexalde neighbourhood, around the church of Santa María de Gorostiza. The gastronomy also marks the history of Nabarniz, with its specialty in red beans, and above all, the vegetable stew. Enjoy these specialties in the town's restaurants.

Ereño Marble Quarries

Highlight • Structure

It is famous for its marble, and already in the 1st century AD the Romans exploited the quarries, now in disuse. There are literary references that describe Ereño as "Capital of the marble route", material found in many buildings in Urdaibai, and also on the other side of the ocean.

According to data from the historian Tomás de Goikolea, Ereño was established in the 9th century, and the inhabitants of the municipality could be direct descendants of those who lived in the Santimamiñe cave.

On September 29, the festival of San Miguel, mass and popular pilgrimage are celebrated.

Views over the Urdaibai marsh

Highlight • Viewpoint

From this stretch of road you can enjoy the incredible landscape of the Urdaibai marsh. A long tongue of water and sand whose configuration changes with the tides and is in a good state of conservation. Along the road, the entire estuary is surrounded and the sand islands inside can be seen.

Arteaga Castle

Highlight • Castle

Its history of mills and ironworks becomes glamorous when Napoleon III builds a castle for his wife Eugenia de Montijo, next to the marsh. The castle is, together with the Urdaibai Bird Center, its tourist emblem, but due to its strategic location, with the marsh as the setting for a unique landscape, close to the historic town of Gernika-Lumo and a few kilometers from some of the most important beaches from Bizkaia, Gautegiz Arteaga has many interesting natural resources.

Kortezubi is a municipality that preserves an extensive landscape, ecological and cultural heritage. It was chosen by our ancestors as a home and residence in prehistoric times, undoubtedly attracted by the abundance of resources and the comfort of its many caves. Proof of this is the Santimamiñe Cave. It enjoys a landscape open towards the estuary and secluded in the interior valleys, with walks and routes that immerse you in an exceptional landscape.
