Willems Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

In 1927 the bridge was jacked up several meters and stripped of its ornaments. The bicycle and pedestrian path were also moved to the outside of the bridge, because the sharp increase in road traffic caused increasingly dangerous situations. Until the opening of the Maastunnel during the Second World War, the Willemsbrug was the westernmost fixed bank connection across the Maas, so that increasingly important international traffic also used this connection straight through the old center of Rotterdam.

The Willemsbrug played an important role during the Second World War. Marines from the nearby Marine Barracks on Oostplein defended this bridge and the adjacent railway bridge and quay 'Boompjes' since the German invasion on May 10, 1940. The resistance of the Dutch marines was much stronger than the Germans had expected. The Marines managed to hold back the advance of the German troops until the Germans decided to bomb the center of Rotterdam on May 14, 1940.

Poortgebouw Rotterdam

Highlight • Monument

Finally a makeover for the striking Poortgebouw
The more than 140-year-old Poortgebouw on the Kop van Zuid is finally getting a facelift. The contractor has informed the municipality of Rotterdam that the renovation of the dilapidated building will start on 1 March.
In 2001 the municipality sold the iconic building on Stieltjesstraat, twenty years later the building has a number of owners and a lot of overdue maintenance. The four real estate investors who bought the Poortgebouw in 2016 also postponed the much-needed refurbishment. To the anger of construction alderman Bas Kurvers, who demanded a restoration in 2019. When he failed to do so, he threatened with a fine of one ton.

A colonnade or colonnade is a row of columns supporting an enclosure. As an architectural element, the colonnade goes back to the architecture of ancient Greece. Specific forms of the colonnade are the portico, where the colonnade is placed as a hall in front of the entrance of a building, and the peristyle, where the gallery runs around an open courtyard.

Of course it is great to walk along all the sights during the day, but an evening walk over the bridges is a real treat.

De Boeg (The Bow) War Memorial

Highlight • Monument

De Boeg is a war memorial in Rotterdam. It commemorates the 3,500 crew members of Dutch merchant ships who lost their lives in World War II. Fred Carasso's monument was unveiled by Princess Margriet on the corner of Boompjes and Leuvehaven on April 10, 1957. The 46 meter high aluminum construction symbolizes a bow in the concrete waves. Later, on July 15, 1965, an 8 meter high bronze sculpture group was added to the monument: a helmsman, three sailors and one drowned. On the side is the text: "They kept course".
