When walking it is safer to use the stairs if you want to go up and down the bridge. On top of the bridge you have a beautiful view in the distance or on boats passing under the bridge.

Gaasperzoom Nature Reserve

Highlight • Forest

In this natural area a group of cattle can graze freely. Warning signs are therefore set up at the entrance to this area to keep an appropriate distance from the animals. Gaasperzoom connects De Hoge Dijk with Gaasperplas. There is a bike path and hiking trails.

The route follows the hiking trails. Directly to the right after the sign is a completely natural hiking trail. Due to heavy rainfall in recent years and the grazing cattle, this first part is only recommended for experienced hikers, although it is beautiful. If you are not that experienced, you should follow the cycle path and turn right when you see the yellow warning sign onto the paved hiking trail.

View of Molen 't Haantje

Highlight • Monument

Windmill 't Haantje in Weesp is a tipping mill. The combination is something very special. There are only two or three of them left. This makes Molen 't Haantje a very special mill. Before the mill turned in Weesp in 1828, it stood in Amsterdam for over two hundred years. Every year, Molen 't Haantje is open to visitors on Windmill Day (always on the 2nd Saturday in May) and Open Monument Day (on the 2nd Saturday in September).

To the right of the mill is Villa Casparus (nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Villa_Casparus). A comparable building was located on the opposite side of the river on the Prins Bernhaardlaan. This was the former office building of the Van Houten company (vanhoutenchocolates.com/vanhouten/vanhouten/en_ph/about.html), behind which was the warehouse and production facility. The building was very dilapidated and was completely demolished. The cocoa beans were delivered via the river Smal Weesp. A resident of the street told me that objects from the 16th century are still being found there.

Schutsluis Keulse Vaart

Highlight • Bridge

A "schutsluis" is the most well-known version of a lock with a lock keeper's house. The lock and the original bridge were built in 1564 in the "Cologne Canal" (ship route between Amsterdam and Cologne) and rebuilt between 1817 and 1823. It was restored again in 1928. The current bridge previously stood on the site of the Zwaantjesbrug.
A lock allows ships to move from one water level to another. A ship can be raised or lowered with it. Passage through locks is regulated, for example, by lights attached to the lock.

Trekvogelpad From Weesp to Amsterdam 21 km

This morning we met with the Trekvogel friend at Weesp station. Yes, we can go on the road together again for 2 days.
Started with coffee in Weesp center and chatting on towards Driemond. On the way another hiker hooked up for a chat. What a beautiful route. From the picturesque Weesp to …

Mom had the week off last week. I didn't. The day started rainy. It kept drizzling for the first three hours. Then it dried up. You start with the Oranjesluizen. Then you walk between the islands and boat area to the Nesciobrug and follow a few km of the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal. At the McDonalds in Diemen we had a coffee …
