Cascada de Los Tilos

Highlight • Waterfall

The climb to Los Tilos, also called Cascada de los Tilos. Up here is the well-known waterfall that every La Palma vacationer will visit at some point.

The climb to the really beautiful dead end, where you feel like you are in the middle of the jungle, is anything but easy to navigate. It's about 3 kilometers up with a total climb of 250 meters. (8.4 percent gradient on average) There are three really steep ramps, each 300 meters long, included in the climb. The asphalt is always in good condition, the volume of traffic depends somewhat on the time of day. In the morning until midday it is a little higher than in the afternoon due to the hikers who are on their way to the parking lot.

If you are driving from the direction of Santa Cruz, you will see the sign "Los Tilos" in front of the world-famous Los Sauces bridge, which will then let you turn onto the correct street. If you are coming from Los Sauces and are driving over the bridge, you must turn right immediately after the bridge. After turning, you are on a one-way street, so you don't have to expect any oncoming traffic when you make your way down the small descent that follows. If you have time and desire, it's worth stopping in this piece. Here you can have a wonderful view of the Los Sauces bridge. As soon as you have reached the lowest point, you have to turn left again towards Los Tilos. This is where the actual climb begins.

View of the Laurel Forest Gorge

Highlight • Viewpoint

From the Los Tilos visitor center, you have to walk steadily uphill for about 2.5 km through the laurel forest along a wide forest road to reach the Mirador Espigón Atravesado viewpoint. The last stretch of the path leads you along a narrow ridge secured with a railing. And here you can already get a sense of the view that awaits you. The viewpoint clings to the rock face like an eagle's nest. Above and below you, the impenetrable canopy of the laurel forest stretches over the steep cliffs and down into the deep ravines. You might even have the chance to see as far as the Atlantic Ocean.

Walked from Los Tilos to the viewpoint. From there, the path is closed.

Short-distance planning: Since our level of fitness does not seem particularly good to us today, only a 7 km trip to the vantage point is up for discussion. The entrance in Los Tilos was found immediately and the path led through an evergreen laurel forest. Finches accompanied us again and again, almost hand-tame, they are probably fixated on hikers and …

From the casita de madera you go up to the Mirador Espigón Atravesado along a wide cart track that crosses an airy laurisilva forest. The last few minutes of the ascent are along a narrow path, sometimes with steps, which leads to the mirador. The most exposed parts are protected by a fence. From the small mirador (there are two …

The trail begins at the Los Tilos visitor center. We did two adults and a girl of 6 and a half. We are not used to trails and we finished it well. The only thing that if you have any difficulty walking, think about it because it is uphill. Everything goes on the same self-guided path, the variations of sides …

Wide path to the Mirador, only narrow stairs to the top - nothing for people who are afraid of heights.
It's worth the climb, pay attention to the weather so you can enjoy the view.
It is only a few meters from the visitor center to the waterfall, which is also worthwhile.
There are several parking spaces at the starting …

Because another hiking route was closed due to a landslide, we explored the cold, damp and dark valley of Los Tilos today. With a chic waterfall and a spectacular vantage point on a rock pulpit.
