Monument to the Creators of the Augustów Canal

Highlight • Monument

Plans to create a water connection between the Vistula and the Niemen date back to the second half of the 18th century. However, it was only the introduction of high customs duties by Prussia in 1821 for the transit of Polish and Lithuanian goods through their territory that forced this concept to be implemented. The initiative to build a large circular water artery was put forward in 1822 by the Minister of Treasury of the Kingdom of Poland, Franciszek Ksawery Drucki-Lubecki. Two teams, a Polish one led by Lieutenant Colonel Ignacy Prądzyński and a Russian one delegated by Prince Aleksander Württemberg, carried out leveling and geodetic measurements and route designs. In 1824, Tsar Alexander I decided to start the project and entrust it to the Polish side.

It is fun to see this beautiful lock, built partly in wood, working. Especially when kayakers use it.

Witold Pielecki Memorial

Highlight • Monument

The board has the surname Pielecki and, in addition, the name Witold. This is not a mistake, because you could think so and confuse him with Witold Pilecki. That is why I am explaining that Witold Pielecki, pseudonym "Żwirko", was born in 1918 in Kalety (currently Belarus). He volunteered for the army and became an artillery corporal. In September 1939, he fought as a non-commissioned officer in the ranks of the 29th Light Artillery Regiment. He took part in the defense of Warsaw. After the capitulation, he was taken prisoner by the Germans, from which he soon escaped and came to the Suwałki region. He created a partisan unit that became famous for many daring actions against the occupiers.
He was killed on April 25, 1944 during an ambush on German gendarmes in the village of Mikaszówka near Sejny. He was awarded the Cross of Valor and the Silver Cross of Merit with Swords and posthumously the Order of Virtuti Militari and promoted to the rank of lieutenant.

One of the last locks (looking towards the border with Belarus) on the Augustów Canal in Poland. There are only three more locks: Sosnówek, Tartak and Kudrynki.
