The Sonnstein Hut is located spectacularly high above Lake Traunsee on the Kleiner Sonnstein. The small hut belongs to the Traunkirchen mountain rescue service and is open on weekends and public holidays from Easter to October. The house is open every day during the Upper Austrian school holidays.

The Sonnstein Hut was built between 1966 and 1968. At that time, tons of building materials were carried up the mountain on foot by helpers. The material cable car has only been in existence since 1979 and supplies the house with food and drinks.

I always stop at the hut for a short rest. For a snack or a cool drink in summer. From the tiny terrace you can enjoy a wonderful view across Lake Traunsee to the striking Traunstein. It is not possible to stay overnight in the hut.

The quickest way to reach the Sonnstein Hut is from the Siegesbach settlement south of Traunkirchen. From Ebensee you should expect a walking time of 2 ½ hours. The steep climb from Ludleben through the summit flank up to the hut requires surefootedness. It takes about 5 minutes from the hut to reach the summit of the Kleiner Sonnstein with its beautiful wooden cross.

Großer Sonnstein Summit

Highlight • Summit

The summit cross itself is rather unspectacular. But the view from above of the lake is awesome! And you can only enjoy this when you go to the steep edge of the summit.

Ebensee Parish Church

Highlight • Religious Site

The Roman Catholic parish church of Ebensee am Traunsee is dedicated to St. Joseph and is a listed building.
The church was built by Michael Prunner between 1727 and 1729 and a tower was added in the southern choir corner in 1841. In 1911 the church was massively expanded, but only the choir remained from the original baroque church. The frescoes were painted between 1932 and 1933 by Karl Reisenbichler.

Lion Monument on Lake Traunsee

Highlight • Monument

Always a nice place to rest and linger. There is now a table with two bankers under the old portal. The lion still looks threateningly towards Gmunden and guards the border between Ebensee and Gmunden. How many stories are there about this place with its monument...?
In 1963 the monument fell victim to a bomb attack and was reopened in 1964.
