Henry IV's Mill

Highlight • Castle

The mill is located on the northwest side of the municipality of Nérac, in contact with the municipalities of Lavardac and Barbaste . It made it possible to control the passages on the bridge of Barbaste, which is 20 m downstream from the highest tower of the mill. This bridge already existed in 1259 because it is mentioned in the homage Ysarn de Sainte-Marise to the Count of Toulouse for all the land he owned in Agenais.

The mill has a sturdy appearance. The central body has a square plan. It is bordered by four towers also of square plan.

The mill consists of six floors above the floor of the mill wheels.

Height of the towers: 29 m.  (for the highest), 26 m. and 27 m. for the others.

Highlight • Historical Site

This exceptional monument is the largest fortified mill in France. It is also called the Henri IV mill, because it belonged to Henri de Navarre, who became one of the most popular kings of France. In Nérac, the Château Henri IV peacefully overlooks the Baïse and tells the story of a king who became a legend.
Former residence of the lords of Albret, it was the beating heart of the court of Navarre during the Renaissance.
It was here that Henri de Navarre, the future Henri IV, grew up and affirmed his destiny.
Today, the château-museum invites you on a journey between great History and the Gascon art of living.
A stroll along the river, elegant galleries, and royal memories echo each other.
A must-see to understand the soul of Nérac and Albret.

Château de Nérac

Highlight • Castle

Located in the commune of Nérac, in the French department of Lot-et-Garonne, the Château de Nérac is a building in the style of Louis XII and represents the transition between Gothic art and the First Renaissance.

Completed during the reign of Jeanne d'Albret , who held her court there, the castle was dismantled during the French Revolution .

The north wing, the only one that has survived [ 1 ] , was classified as a historical monument [ 1 ] , [ 2 ]  in 1862. It now houses the Nérac Museum , dedicated to the Albret family and the Renaissance in general.
