Missionary Birchbark Chapel

Highlight • Religious Site

This reconstruction is located on Fort Street in Marquette Park and commemorates the presence of Fr. Claude Dablon and Jacques Marquette on the island in 1670-71. Dablon had arrived in the winter and was joined in the spring by Marquette, who was traveling with a wandering band of Huron who had been seeking a home since being driven from southern Ontario by Iroquoian warriors in the 1650s.

Sugar Loaf Viewpoint

Highlight • Viewpoint

While pedaling through Mackinac Island State Park, one scenic highlight is the Sugar Loaf lookout point. This breathtaking vista offers panoramic views over the forest and of the park's largest limestone formation rising majestically 75 feet tall. Once an island eroding in ancient Lake Algonquin, Sugar Loaf remained as an awe-inspiring tower of rock when the waters eventually receded to create this breathtaking look out spot.

The Mission Church is located on Main Street at the east end of Mackinac Island's historic downtown and is Michigan's oldest surviving house of worship. For decades, the area below the fort was used as a garden for vegetable cultivation. Shortly after the fort was closed in 1895, the Park Commission transformed this area into a park in honor of Father Jacque Marquette. By 1907, the landscaping was completed, and two years later, the statue by Gaetano Trentanove was erected in the center of the park. It is located on Main Street in front of Fort Mackinac. The park is available year-round.

Mackinac Island

Highlight • Settlement

Time seems to stand still on Mackinac Island, not only because there are no cars, but also because there are two historic military forts and a handful of the oldest buildings in Michigan. Just being here will make you feel like you're in the past! Mackinac Island is home to many beautiful examples of Victorian architecture among the cottages and B&Bs, many of which are well over 100 years old. The island's museums and reenactments by costumed interpreters also offer glimpses into the lives of 19th-century soldiers and civilians.
