St. Michael Catholic Parish Church (Wachstedt)

Highlight • Religious Site

The listed Roman Catholic parish church of St. Michael is in Wachtedt, a municipality in the Thuringian district of Eichsfeld. The parish belongs to the deanery of Dingelstädt in the diocese of Erfurt.
The neo-Gothic hall church with three naves was built in 1840-1845 in place of a predecessor. Since 1853, a roof tower has been rising from the gabled roof of the nave, which is covered with a pointed helmet on which a turret sits. In 1886 an extension was built to the east with a retracted choir closed on three sides and a sacristy to the south-east. The church was renovated in 1906 and 1965-1967, while the church furnishings were partially removed.
The interior was decorated with stucco in 1925/1926. The ceiling painting on the coffered, stuccoed flat ceiling was created by Norbert Krohmer in 1928. The parapet of the west gallery is decorated. The chancel is covered with a ribbed vault on consoles, angels and the Lamb of God are depicted in the stucco of the fields. The winged altar from 1901 is neo-Gothic. Its construction comes from Heinrich Schweppenstede from Wiedenbrück, a relief from Anton Mormann. The baptismal font is dated 1707. Figures of Mary and John stand at the entrance to a crucifixion group that was created around 1500.
The colored stained glass windows in the nave with figurative representations were created by Franz Xaver Zettler between 1904 and 1906. The Stations of the Cross are by Willy Albermann from Cologne. The organ with 18 registers, distributed over 2 manuals and pedal, was built in 1920 by Anton Feith and restored by Karl Brode & Sohn.
