The statue commemorates Marshal Blücher, whose troops crossed the wintry Rhine at Burg Pfalzgrafenstein on New Year's Eve 1813/1814.
After Napoleon's troops were defeated in Russia (1812) and then near Leipzig, the French withdrew across the Rhine. Field Marshal Blucher was on his heels. On the New Year's Eve from 1813 to 1814, Blücher put his Silesian troops across the frozen Rhine near the Pfalzgrafenstein.
The allied army struck a (Russian) pontoon bridge from the right bank of the Rhine to the Pfalzgrafenstein and from there on to the left bank of the Rhine. While work was still being carried out on the bridge, on January 1 between 2:30 and 4 p.m. 18 infantry battalions crossed the Rhine with boats and formed a bridgehead on the enemy bank. At 7:30 p.m. the infantry of the 1st Brigade followed and then the infantry of the 2nd Brigade. On January 2nd at 9:00 a.m. the bridge was ready. Since the "French side" remained calm, the Rhine crossing succeeded without significant losses.
A total of 60,000 soldiers, 15,000 horses and 182 gunmen crossed the river.
