The contiguous built-up area of the city shows considerable differences in height. The city received its current name Kirchheimbolanden in the 19th century. A church of St. Remigius was mentioned as early as the 12th century. This church gave the place its name. Since the place was subordinate to the Lords of Bolanden, it later became Kirchheimbolanden.
The city is still called Kerchem today. The inhabitants are therefore also called Kerchemians. The city is abbreviated to Kibo.
