The exact year of construction of the single-nave Gothic hall church with polygonal choirs, west tower and ribbed vault is unknown. In 1260 it was first described in the records of Lippstadt.
The church was badly damaged during the Thirty and Seven Years' War because it was used as a storeroom for the occupying forces. An explosion of a powder keg even shattered parts of the roof and the vault partially collapsed. First, the church was to be demolished, as it was now dilapidated and no longer needed due to a lack of membership. But in 1836 the congregation prevailed against the church authorities and the government, so that the church could be renovated.
In 2004, the Jakobikirche was once again about to be merged with another parish and the church was therefore about to be closed. It should be turned into a private museum. However, the community manages to work out a concept for preservation again, because the church room has also been used as an event room since 2005.
