Bacher Lay Basalt Quarry

Highlight • Natural Monument

It is a disused basalt quarry, which is located between Bad Marienberg and Nisterau directly on the Black Nister, an inlet of the large Nister. The name is derived from the formerly independent place Bach, which is now part of the municipality of Nisterau; Lay in this case means quarry. The area extends in parts over the districts of Bad Marienberg, Bach, Eichenstruth and Stockhausen-Illfurth.

The Bacher Lay is characterized by a mighty, almost vertical basalt stone wall, which was created by the earlier basalt mining. The nearby "Pfaffenmal", an 18-meter-high columnar basalt cone in the construction of a mile, is also worth seeing. (Source Wickipedia)

The place is really great and the bike path is just very nice. Just check it out for yourself !!

Bad Marienberg Church

Highlight • Religious Site

The Evangelical Parish Church is located on Kirchstrasse. This is a rectangular hall building from 1819 based on designs by master architect and director F.L. Schrumpf and E. Ph. Wolff, who also took over the construction management. The tower, which remained unfinished, was expanded in 1900 and the spire was added in its current form.

It is assumed that around 1000 there was a chapel, perhaps made of wood, on the striking hilltop above today's Bad Marienberg, which was replaced in medieval times by a chapel dedicated to St. Mary. The church on the mountain belonged to the Haiger deanery, which was subordinate to the archdeaconry of St. Lubentius in Dietkirchen an der Lahn. The church in Marienberg was therefore under the authority of the Archbishop of Trier.

Hikers' parking lot at the Schorrberg ski lift in Bad Marienberg.
ATTENTION: When the ski lift is in operation, especially at the weekend, parking is not an option, so it is better to park in parking lots in the city center OR to be there very early... it is also better to be there early …

From Nisterau through the Bacher Lay to the Marienquelle and back
We parked at the cemetery in Nisterau. Lots of space, shade and the small forest path down to the Nister is really spectacular.

Tip:
If the temperature is below 0° Celsius for several days, impressive icicles form on the book wall of the former basalt mine, which almost look like ice waterfalls.
