Saint Leonard's Church Molenbeersel

Highlight • Religious Site

On the site of the current house number 50 on the Oudekerkstraat, the Sint-Leonarduskapel, which was founded in 1772, was located. This chapel is depicted on the Ferraris map (1771-1777) and in the Atlas der Buurtwegen (1845), in both cases as a single-aisled building without a transept.
In 1826, a sacristy and a tower were added to the chapel, which are clearly recognizable in the Atlas der Buurtwegen. This chapel was an auxiliary chapel of the church of Neeritter (NL). In 1828 the chapel became a rectorate, in 1834 an independent church. In 1837 the Sint-Leonardus parish was founded.
In 1863, the current Sint-Leonarduskerk was built in the new center of Molenbeersel on the Weertersteenweg because the old church (the Sint-Leonarduskapel) in Molenbeersel was too small to accommodate all believers. The old chapel was then converted into a school and the parsonage next to it into a teacher's house.
The chapel was sold in 1936 and has been used as a residence ever since. However, one can still see that this house used to serve as a chapel by the shape of the house and the roof. One can also still clearly recognize the choir aisle.

Saint Martin's Church (Kessenich)

Highlight • Religious Site

The church tower dates from the 14th century. It was built of marlstone in the early Maas Gothic style. The first tower counted three sections; the fourth was added in 1899. In the south-east corner remains of the 12th-century predecessor, the one made of rubble and Maaskeien.

The church building is built of bricks baked nearby field ovens. For the portal they placed two huge limestone boulders coming from the former church(es). Inside, the church building looks remarkably cheerful thanks to the patterns of colored decorative stones and rich wall painting.
